Exploring another Algarve

Explore the narrow cobbled streets of the ancient town of Tavira, including the Baroque churches of Santiago and Santa Maria do Castelo and the beautiful castle. From its highest tower enjoy the superb scenery of both the Gilão River and the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy a traditional almond sweet over lunch at one of the local delicatessens. Go on a boat trip to the stunning Tavira island, and take your time to swim in the warm waters of the sea. Stay overnight at the luxurious Pousada de Tavira (Graça Convent).

After a splendid breakfast under the 15th century Renaissance cloister of the Pousada, head to the renowned Quinta da Ria golf course, or simply relax over cocktails at the sleek pool deck.

Visit the Moorish town of Alcoutim and appreciate the 13th century castle and the local museum, rich in interesting archaeological findings. The River Guadiana acts as the border between Alcoutim and Spain, so plenty of history and tales to uncover from the locals. Enjoy a light family picnic at one of the local parks. Rent canoes to descend the Guadiana River and appreciate the evening sunset in a spectacular natural setting. Stay overnight in Mértola, a beautiful town bathed in amphitheatre by the River Guadiana, at the fabulous boutique hotel Estalagem de São Domingos, and take the opportunity to watch the striking stars from the hotel’s exclusive observatory.
