History and Culture

Become immersed in the rich historical and cultural heritage of Portugal, including exciting destinations such as Lisbon and Oporto, and engage with the local communities – this can prove to be as fascinating as the spectacular palaces you see.

Beyond the cultural sites well known to most – like Torre de Belém, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Sintra Pena Palace. Torre dos Clérigos, other sites are equally important and culturally inspiring, if a little less known and in some cases a little less accessible.

Some of the magical gems vary from the many fantastic UNESCO heritage sites like Évora and Guimarães, beautiful medieval castles and monasteries such as Marvão, Monsanto and Alcobaça, sites of great archaeological interest like Conímbriga, fascinating landmarks from the time of the Portuguese Discoveries, treasured Roman and Gothic heritage-listed buildings and ruins, spectacular botanic gardens.

Also take part in wonderful gastronomic and wine-tasting experiences and discover special and inspiring places associated, for example, to the nostalgic Fado music and the greats of Portuguese literature like Fernando Pessoa and Nobel Prize laureate José Saramago. It doesn’t matter where you are, or when, something will be on hand to remind you that Portugal is a modern country with a rich history and culture.
